OUR INSTRUCTORS

Matthew Sutton earned his Bachelors of Music in Voice Performance from San Diego State University, Having taught voice and piano for upwards of 6 years, working his way through his studies while doing so. Specializing in a variety of genres, specifically classical, musical theater, rock and pop music; Matthew is dedicated to making sure your lessons are not only educational, but a fun and rewarding experience.

While living in San Diego, he had taken the stage in several popular musical roles, most notably The Beast in Beauty and the Beast. He also threw on a mic and wig for Simon Stride in Jekyll and Hyde, Ben/New Kid in IT the Parody Musical (Silly but a great comedic role), and one of the more recent roles as Valcour in the Baroque Opera L’amant Anonyme. His opera experience doesn’t start there though, as he also played King Kaspar in Amahl and the Night Visitors, and sang Tenor 1 in Kurt Weill’s acclaimed work The Seven Deadly Sins.

Matthew began his teacher career quite early, offering lessons in community college to friends to gain experience as a teacher. While he was still new to the craft, he took to it almost instantly. Once transferring into San Diego State University, he immediately looked for any opportunity to teach one on one. His first official teaching gig was with School of Rock. It was here Matthew found the connection to not only the technical side of teaching, but the performance side as well. With his student singing and performing full scale rock shows, he had to make sure they were up to the task.

After moving from School of Rock to SoCal Music Academy, Matthew was then able to develop curriculum for his students, rather than having their songs and technical needs laid out. Matthew helped to create and run several programs, including a rock, pop, and jazz band and a stylized curriculum for each of his voice students.

Matthew’s philosophy as a teacher is simple. “If you want to learn, anyone can sing.” He believes everyone has their own unique voice, and all it takes is a positive mindset and the will to make it happen.
